Lady Deborah Chambers KC appeared in the Fiji Supreme Court as counsel for the respondent in the case of Mohammed Aiyub and Others v Mohammed Shaheem Khairati.
On 16 August 2024, Deborah represented the respondent in the case, stepping in for his usual counsel from Sydney, who was unavailable due to commitments in London.
The case centred on breaches of fiduciary duty and trustee obligations related to an estate, with the court ruling in favour of Chambers' client, with costs payable by the appellant. Read the judgment.
The Judges presiding at the hearing were Australian Judge Justice William Calanchini, who was President, and two retired New Zealand Supreme Court Judges – Justice Terence Arnold and Justice William Young – bringing back memories for Deborah of appearing in the Supreme Court of New Zealand.
